Grounding in the old Germanic/Norse way is IMHO a good way to better understand the runes. There are the ancient rune poems which are available here:

Then there are the Eddas, the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, by Snorri Sturluson, which are the prime sources of Norse myth and legend. For something that reads more like an epic from Norse legend, there is Saga of the Volsungs. Lastly there are many Icelandic sagas, the best of which (although others may argue it) is Egil's Saga, probably history's best known runemaster. All of this can be read online at
